The Clay Surface:
Variations of Design

The variety of ways in which the clay surface can be transformed is displayed by our three featured artists in the current show, The Clay Surface: Variations of Design. Each individual utilizes a different process in order to produce their desired aesthetic. Ellen’s use of transfers, underglaze and sgrafitto create a layering of patterns which bring about new patterns as they are applied to the wheel thrown surface. Hand-built plates, bowls and vases are adorned with a soft palette of painted designs that create a romantic aesthetic indicative of Megan’s work. And sculpted aquatic life bursts through the surface of wheel thrown pots, all things beach and sea make up the body of Chris’s clay art. Each artist uniquely builds upon the exterior of their work to push the limits of the clay facade.
