Beginner plus to intermediate.

Summary: This 7-week course bridges the gap between wheel-thrown and hand-built objects, challenging students to move beyond single-technique objects. The curriculum encourages students to see these methods not as separate disciplines, but as complementary tools within a single creative process. Participants will refine their throwing precision, master complex handbuilding construction, and develop the critical skills needed to seamlessly join disparate clay components into cohesive, high-quality works.

Learning Objectives:

• Master basic handbuilding techniques: pinching, coiling, and slab construction.

• Familiarize oneself with fundamental wheel throwing skills: centering, opening, pulling, and shaping.

• Understand the drying stages of clay and the firing process (bisque and glaze).

• Refine surfaces, glazing, and surface decoration techniques.

• Develop an understanding of form, function, and aesthetics in ceramics.

• Build confidence and creativity in working with clay.

You must have some experience on the wheel and feel very comfortable centering and pulling the walls for the throwing portion of the session.

We will send notification when it is time to purchase clay for the upcoming session. Please do not purchase more than one bag to start. There will not be enough room on your shelf for more than one bag. Your clay will be at the studio on your first day of class. The best clay bodies for handbuilding are 182G, 420 and 108. You can wait until you get to class to choose. Tools are not included, you can purchase tool kits on the website or bring your own.

Each student will get up to two 2.5 hour time slots of open studio each week. Open studio begins the second week of class.

Refunds requested more than two weeks prior to the first class are fully refundable however there will be a $25 processing fee. There will be no refunds within two weeks of the first class but you can get a credit towards another class. There will be no credits once the class begins in any circumstance, nor can we transfer you to a later semester. We cannot be flexible on this policy for any reason.
